Why we celebrate small business month?
October is Small Business Month, and we're celebrating!
At SEF Canada, we love to celebrate entrepreneurs and their small businesses. We all know that businesses create jobs and pay taxes, but what other impacts are we celebrating?
We're celebrating how local businesses impact local communities: locally owned businesses support local initiatives, charities, and infrastructure. Local employees spend their money in the community, stimulating the economy. A 2018 Small Business Economic Impact Study found that approximately 67% of every dollar spent at a small business stays in the local community (AMEX). How’s that for a cycle?
We're celebrating the risk takers and inventors! Innovation comes from small businesses; they're not spending months or years evaluating new ideas. Small businesses are incredible examples of taking important steps to grow: Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Sir Richard Branson, Oprah Winfrey, Howard Schultz, and Elon Musk had to start small before they grew gigantic.
We're celebrating marginalized folks who bring their authentic selves to their businesses, making all of our livelihoods richer. We celebrate our 2SLGBTQ+, immigrant, women, Black, and Indigenous entrepreneurs.
We're celebrating and applauding all of the tenacious, hardworking, innovative, creative, and wondrous people who start and run small businesses.
At SEF, we're celebrating entrepreneurs every day, but especially this month. We pledge to continue working with communities everywhere to provide a system to help create small businesses and to share our methodology to provide those entrepreneurs with the tools to succeed.
Here's to you, the business owner, the worker, and the patron, who keep our economies thriving.
Let us know of your favourite local businesses in the comments - Let us applaud them too!
